First Steps

So this is where my journey with Thyroid Cancer became known. After testing and surgery it was determined that I have had the cancer for at least a few years due to the amount of lymph nodes that it had spread to, but that is for another post.

   So on this day I honestly thought my trip to the doctor would be just like any other. I had plans to talk to my doctor about my allergies that hadn't seemed to be getting any better even with the recent medication change. Unknowing  to me this would lead to a multitude of testings. I had mentioned to her that I had a lump on the right side of my neck that had been there for at least 2 years and recently noticed that there were two additional lumps in the same area. Since I had the problem for so long and more had popped up she offered to have an ultrasound and some blood work done to ease my mind as she didn't think it was anything serious either. So I left the office with an ultrasound and bloodwork scheduled for the following week. 

  For those of you who don't know me well I am terrified of needles so going for blood work was horrible for me, not to mention they took about 6 vials of blood to check for all kinds of things. The ultrasound did feel as though it took forever. The quiet I think got to me more than anything though. The tech was moving in different directions taking different pictures of my next when all of a sudden she stopped and asked if I had ever had an issue with my thyroid. I told her not to my knowledge as I wasn't one to go to the doctor often and I didn't think I had any symptoms of thyroid issues. Boy was I wrong! She showed me on the screen where it looked like a huge mass was spreading from my thyroid up the right side of my neck just below my jaw/ear. She couldn't say much about it obviously so I was left with more questions than answers that day. As I left her office she told me good luck and she would keep me in her thoughts. Little did I know I was going to need those positive vibes more than I could have expected. Now the wait was on for my doctor to get the results so lets just say the next week was full up emotions as I had begun looking on the internet for what could possibly be wrong. BIG MISTAKE!! Avoid the internet as it only made my concerns worse!
